103 voters, one address: Poll panel to look into unnatural roll

A municipal ward in West Delhi has houses with more than 100 voters registered on a single address, raising worries about bogus voters just three days before this Sunday’s municipal elections.

In one case, as many as 103 voters are listed against house number WZ 189 in Khayala village, under ward number 108, Khayala, according to the area’s electoral rolls.

In the same neighbourhood, house number WZ 102 has 90 residents, house number WZ 40/1 has 80 residents and several others have 40 voters or more.

When Newsline showed the electoral rolls to State Chief Election Commissioner Rakesh Mehta, he said it appeared “unnatural” that so many voters were registered on a single address. “It could be a case of either impersonation or a wrong address. We will look into the matter. However, voting can only be done on the basis of voter identity cards, where the photo and the name of a voter is mentioned,” Mehta said.

The list of unusually high voters includes house number WZ 101 with 76 voters, WZ 48/47 with 44 voters, WZ 118 with 47 voters and WZ 119 with 46 voters, according to the electoral rolls .

House number WZ 102, on which 90 residents are registered, belongs to an acquaintance of Dayanand Chandila, sitting Congress legislator from Rajouri Garden, under which the Khayala ward is situated.

Chandila’s daughter-in-law, Meenakshi Chandila is contesting from this ward on a Congress ticket. As many as 80 voters are listed under Chandila’s own house, number WZ 40/1.
