WINTER WONDERLAND AT LINGFIELD

Cheltenham is over and done with for another year, so it is time to start looking towards the upcoming Flat season.

The Lincoln meeting is now just around the corner, but the all-weather specialists get once last chance to take the spotlight in the Blue Square Winter Derby at Lingfield.

This Group Three event was established in 1998 and boasts a prize fund of £100,000, providing something of a finale for the all-weather season.

Premio Loco was edged out by a nose back in 2009 and he is favourite with most bookmakers to gain redemption this time.

Winner of four Group Two events, trainer Chris Wall has indicated Premio Loco is an intended runner on what will be his seasonal bow at the Surrey venue.

Junoob won the trial event for Tom Dascombe last month and looks certain to take a major role in the finish after a fruitful winter of improvement.

The bluesquare.com Spring Cup is not the most conventional of Classic trials, but, after last season, the winner may be one to note for future reference.

Dubawi Gold was a narrow scorer 12 months ago for Richard Hannon before going on to be placed in both the English and Irish 2000 Guineas, as well as winning at Group Two level.

The five-furlong Get Your Bet On At Blue Square Hever Sprint Stakes provides a nice Listed opportunity for the speedsters, too.

Newbury round off their jumps season with a decent two-day fixture on Friday and Saturday.

While the first day features some fair handicap action, the second day is all about giving the fairer sex their turn on centre stage.

Opportunities for fillies and mares have improved over recent years and the Listed EBF/TBA Mares’ Novices Handicap Chase Finale could shape up into a decent event.

The EBF Ultima Business Solutions Mares’ NH Novices Hurdle Race Finale, another Listed event, also features on the card in what is otherwise a pretty quiet week in Britain.

The Irish turf season proper kicks off on Sunday with the Group Three Park Express Stakes the feature event at the Curragh.

Lolly For Dolly won the Group Three contest in 2011 before going on to further glory at Royal Ascot.

The Irish Lincolnshire also figures as part of the curtain-raiser.
