Blue Springs South freshman Kevin Puryear stood in the the Independence Events Center, answering each question like a cagey veteran./ppOne by one, he listed off the same talking points his coach had been preaching for the previous month./ppBlue Springs South coach Jimmy Cain had told his team that the Jaguars reserves would be tested at some crucial moment this postseason. It could mean the difference between victory and a solemn bus ride down Interstate 70. That moment had come on Wednesday afternoon, and Puryear, a 6-foot-6 post player, delivered with 15 points off the bench in a 68-42 victory over Fort Osage in a Class 5 sectional game./ppEverybody on the bench has to contribute, Puryear said./ppOn Wednesday afternoon, Puryear did a little more than that. With the Jaguars trailing 24-23 at halftime and senior forward Wes Poke wading through foul trouble for most of the game, Puryear answered with 13 second-half points./ppAnd this wasnt just some freshman lucking his way into a few stickbacks and garbage buckets around the rim. This was a precocious talent showing off his entire offensive repertoire. In the span of a few minutes, Puryear scored on a drop step to his right shoulder, a baby hook and a 15-foot jumper from the elbow./ppWe know what kind of talent he is, Cain said. And I think when the season progressed, the seniors really took him under their wing. And they believe in him, and he knows that now./ppPoke and junior Carl Martin each added 11 points as the Jaguars, 23-5, advanced to the Class 5 state quarterfinals for the first time since 2000.
