BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) – Party goers lived it up on “Fat Tuesday,” however, the festivities took a controversial turn. In Buffalo, there was an unusual contest, to collect the most beads and win a chance to boost your bust.
The event was put on by local bars and night clubs as a way to promote business on what’s normally not a busy party night in Buffalo. The prize of the night is what’s starting the controversy.
Thirteen clubs in Buffalo’s entertainment district strung together a promotion for Mardi Gras, and it’s getting mixed reviews.
Noir owner Justin Anderson said, “There’s a 2 a.m. weigh in. The person with the most beads, special beads, wins.”
The winner gets a breast augmentation surgery, paid for by the bars. However, some of the bars that were listed in the promotion weren’t made aware of it.
Darcy McGee’s owner Mark Croce said, “I just don’t think it was an appropriate promotion. We were never consulted. We never conferred on this. Apparently, they chose to list us in the listing because we had been involved in previous Buffalo entertainment district events.”
Though many took part, some were uncomfortable with the idea.
Buffalo resident Christina Benz said, “I think it’s crazy, it’s just weird.”
“I think it’s a time to have fun and hang out with your friends, but it’s not necessary to have that aspect of it necessarily,” said Emily Darnell, of Buffalo.
News 4 was told the organizer of the event wasn’t available for comment Tuesday. But several people went on to Facebook to voice their displeasure over the event.
