A follow-up to 2010’s Black Ops has always been the most popular rumour for this year’s Call Of Duty, and it’s looking more likely with every passing rumour. The latest centres on retailer Amazon’s French website, who put up listings for Call Of Duty: Black Ops 2 and then quickly took them down again.
Apparently Activision has been so upset about the leak that they’ve banned French websites that reported it from press events and refused to send them any future review copies. We’ve no idea if that’s true, but it sounds odd given that the Black Ops 2 rumours have been going for months now – with the most recent evidence being Activision’s registering of a
Black Ops 2 website.
The rumours specifically point to a prequel to the first game, focusing on the early adventures of CIA operative Frank Woods. As if the Amazon listing wasn’t enough, a new mention of the game was also found on a developer’s online CV over the weekend.
Hugo Beyer of Nerve Software listed Black Ops 2 on his LinkedIn profile, before also quickly removing it. Nerve has helped out with ports and multiplayer maps for a number of Activision titles in the past, including Wolfenstein 3D, Quantum Of Solace, and, wouldn’t you know it, Call Of Duty: Black Ops.
It’s not the only Call Of Duty game doing the rounds on the rumourmill at the moment though, with Sony’s Guy Longworth, who’s just become senior vice president of PlayStation brand marketing, confirming that a version of Call Of Duty will be appearing on the PS Vita this autumn.
‘Of course in the autumn, they’re really looking forward to Call of Duty on Vita,’ he said of his two sons, to website
GameTrailers. ‘We think that’s going to be an absolute game-changer for the platform.’
Whatever the game is it could indeed have a profound effect on the PS Vita’s fortunes in the West, even if it’s just a version of Black Ops 2 (or whatever this year’s game is). If it’s something even more unique to the Vita then you could be looking at a kingmaker on the scale of Monster Hunter in Japan.

Activision are making hay while the sun shines. They don’t care if the more learned gamers are bored, as long as the casual masses keep buying it because they feel they have to and are unaware of other games.

Black ops 2? How imaginative. The creativity knows no bounds. The sky’s the limit reach for the stars.

A COD prequel rumor just like the one with MW3 starring Ghost. I honestly hope they don’t do a prequel. I just want the story of black ops to advance. They already have a potenital plot (that whole thing in 1978).

Call of Duty simply has to get a release on the Vita. I imagine playing a portable version would be pretty novel for many who think the franchise is stale, it would certainly get the masses interested in the hardware. Maybe they’ll give Spec Ops style modes an even bigger push for bitesize gaming on the move.
