Newry bank fire is listed building

Fire fighters are dealing with a blaze at a Bank of Ireland in Newry.

The Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service was called to the Trevor Hill branch on Saturday evening.

The bank is in a Grade B1 listed building. Built as a bank in 1826, it was the first branch of the Bank of Ireland to be established in Ulster.

SDLP MLA for the area Dominic Bradley said most of the damage to the building was internal and the facade has been saved.

The Trevor Hill bank is also the oldest surviving commercial building in Newry still serving its original function.

The Fire Service also tackled a fire at residential flats in County Londonderry.

Fire crews were called to Duddys Court in Derry on Saturday night.
