Police said Sunday the 19-year-old man who escaped from a burning trailer in Selkirk is still in critical condition.
Neighbours identified the man as Brendan Crate. Officials say he remains in the intensive care unit.
Selkirk’s fire chief, Dan Thorsteinson, says an exit in the mobile home was blocked, which hindered fire fighters in accessing the victims.
Thorsteinson says the rear side door, which lead to a porch, was blocked by household items. He says that prevented an exit route for the victims as well as secondary enterence for fire fighters.
Four men were killed in the blaze that broke out early Saturday morning on Bermuda Bay.
“At 4:30 in the morning, I heard glass shattering, seen a bunch of smoke, got outside and the place was just full of smoke and flames,” said Murray Chavluk who lives nearby.
Family members have identified the owner of the trailer as Jason Marsh.
“It’s all very shocking, you get woken up at 6:00 by someone pounding on your door by saying hey, this is what happened,” said Earland Marsh, who is the victim’s brother. “And you don’t have a younger brother anymore.”
Neighbours say two of the victims were a father and son named Lawrence Traverse and Gerald Traverse. The father was 42-years-old and the son was 18- years-old.
A fourth victim, a 37-year-old man, has been identified by neighbours as Aaron St. Jean.
The Manitoba Office of the Fire Commissioner and RCMP are investigating the cause of the blaze.
“We got full room involvement where it burns the ceiling, walls, furnishings and everything in it,” said Mike Purtill of the Manitoba Office of the Fire Commissioner. “You’re looking at temperatures of about a thousand degrees.”
Officials say they’re having difficulties determining the cause of the blaze because of the extreme cold weather.
Autopsies will be done on Monday in Winnipeg. Police say the next of kin have been notified.
