Baby run over by car listed in critical condition

A Columbus toddler who police say was hit by a car on Saturday is listed in critical condition at Scottish Rite.

Police say the 16-month-old was playing in the driveway of a home on 23rd Street when she was run over by a Ford Explorer. According to police reports, her father, 26-year-old Anthony Alvarado told police the SUV accidentally went into gear when he left the child unattended outside. But witnesses claim the father was inside the car at the time.

Alvarado was arrested and charged with serious injury by vehicle and reckless conduct. He is being held in the Muscogee County Jail. Columbus police also say Alvarado is in the country illegally.
