HOPES of reopening a disused church have been dashed after the owners said it would be too expensive.
The United Reformed Church at Throop, which is a listed building and dates back to 1828, would cost more than £200,000 to improve and reopen, the Wessex Trust claims.
Stuart MacLean, executive officer at the United Reformed Church (Wessex) Trust Ltd, said they had “reluctantly decided” that this investment could not be justified in the face of dwindling local
support for the church.
He stressed they would continue to work with the council to meet its ongoing obligations to the listed church premises.
But Throop and Muscliff councillor Ron Whittaker has expressed his dissatisfaction at the decision.
He said: “I’m so angry.
“The promises given to us in 2010 led us to believe that it would be reopened.
“The building is prone to vandalism.
“Vandals have already had some smashed windows.
He added: “It will continue to deteriorate if nothing is done.”

This is stupid.
People are crying about having nowhere to live.
Put a poor family in there.
It has a roof, toilets, cooking facilities and needs protection.
I used to attend that church in 1954.
I mean how much would it cost to make it habitable?
Not 200,000 pounds!

If it needs that much money it’s obvious that the church fraternity haven’t looked after the building for years, cheaper to knock it down and build a house.
