Man, I love winter on the Treasure Coast. Nothing is so gratifying as watching reports of snow being dumped on buddies in Seattle and the Northeast while I’m wearing shorts, flip-flops and a T-shirt. Sure, my yard already is turning into a dust bowl; that just means I don’t have to mow what I euphemistically call my “lawn.” Less time spent mowin’ means more time for goin’ — to fun events such as the ones listed below.
Stews you can use
On a cool winter night, nothing warms you from the inside like thick, steamy stew. Get a heapin’ helpin’ of it when the American Legion Auxiliary at Post 189 offers a beef stew dinner Jan. 21 at the post, 807 Louisiana Ave. in Sebastian. Cocktails begin at 5:30 p.m., dinner at 6 p.m. Cost is $8 per person of two for $15. For information, call 772-589-3479.
Lizard to lawman
OK, so it’s cool enough to savor some stew, but not so cold that you can’t enjoy “Screen on the Green,” the outdoor movie at 6 p.m. Jan. 21 at Pointe West, 1999 Pointe West Drive in Vero Beach. This month, Pointe West and the Indian River County Recreation Department bring you “Rango,” the Golden Globe-nominated, animated film with Johnny Depp providing the voice of the title character, a pet chameleon who accidentally is stranded in the Mojave Desert and becomes sheriff of the town of Dirt. Admission is free. Bring a picnic and a blanket to spread on the ground or wrap up in. Concessions will be available; alcohol is prohibited. For information, call 772-794-9912 or go to pointewestflorida.com.
In it for the money
Keep current with currency as the Treasure Coast Coin Club puts on its 48th annual Coin and Currency Show from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Jan. 21 and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Jan. 22 at the Vero Beach Community Center, 2266 14th Ave. About 40 dealers will be on hand to appraise, buy and sell coins and currency. Club members will present educational displays so that when you buy lunch (also available at the show), you won’t use a 1969-S Lincoln penny with a double-die “heads” side. (It’s worth about $35,000.) Admission is free. Door prizes will be awarded. For information, call 772-234-9476.
