The owner of a listed building in Londonderry did not carry out any works, despite warnings from the Northern Ireland Environment Agency.

The owner of 20 Crawford Square, has been served with a notice to carry out urgent works by Department of the Environment.

It is the first time such a notice has been served in Northern Ireland.

The DoE said the work must begin within seven days or it will intervene.

The property is a Grade B1 listed building in the Clarendon Street Conservation area.

The move comes after the demolition of the former Hamilton Shirt Factory which was in a conservation area.

The Environment Minister Alex Attwood said listed buildings are jewels from the past which must conserved for future generations.

The Victorian building is on the DoE’s register of historical building at risk in Northern Ireland.
