Market crash: Garfield A&P listed among store closures

The AP on Outwater Lane in Garfield will be closing.

The Garfield AP supermarket is closing.

The Garfield supermarket was listed as one of the Montvale-based Great Atlantic Pacific Tea Company, Inc.’s recent store closings.

Although an AP representative said there was no timeline on when the store located on 59 Outwater Lane will be closed, it is expected to happen sometime this year.

The Atlantic Pacific Tea Company announced that it would close 14 stores, five in New Jersey, as part of a turnaround strategy on Jan. 9.

The company announced that it filed a motion with the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York seeking approval to close the 14 stores in four states as the company prepares to emerge from Chapter 11. The store closures are expected to be completed in the company’s fiscal first quarter, subject to court approval.

“We are continuing to take the steps necessary to position AP to emerge from Chapter 11 with a strong future and ensure that we remain focused on our top priority — providing great value and service to our customers every day. As part of our preparations to emerge from Chapter 11, we have decided to close these 14 underperforming locations,” AP President and Chief Executive Officer Sam Martin said. “While this was a very difficult decision that will unfortunately impact some of our customers, partners, associates and the surrounding communities, these actions are absolutely necessary as we continue to strengthen AP’s operating foundation and improve our performance.”
