Wisconsin Maritime Museum schedules upcoming events

MANITOWOC — The Wisconsin Maritime Museum, 75 Maritime Drive, has several upcoming events.

Here’s a look at the events:

» Little Lakefarers Storytime: A museum volunteer will read a book and engage in conversation with you and your child at 1 p.m. on the dates listed below. The event lasts about 15 minutes, and the book title changes each week. This is free with admission to the museum.

Dates and times are: Saturday, “Lighthouse Fireflies;” Jan. 21, “A Cat in a Kayak;” Jan. 28, “Loud Emily.”

» Nook Cranny tours aboard the USS Cobia: These smaller tours, which last about two hours, will give guests a chance to see areas of the submarine not seen on normal tours. The tour will include ladders and smaller spaces, and you must be 16 or older to participate. The cost is $5 per person, plus regular admission for nonmembers.

Dates and times are: 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 28 and Feb. 18; and 2 to 4 p.m. Feb. 12 and Feb. 26.

» Sturgeon Bay’s Maritime Heritage: This Schooner Coast Series will be held at 1 p.m. Jan. 21.

Door County Maritime Museum’s Executive Director Bob Desh will present a look at the rich heritage of shipping and shipbuilding in Sturgeon Bay. The program is $5 or free with museum admission or membership.

» Kewaunee’s Pride, tug “Ludington”: This Schooner Coast Series will be held at 1 p.m. Jan. 28.

Find out about the career of this workboat from Bob Witkowski, caretaker of the tug, and Herman Draeger, a past captain of the tug. This program is $5 or free with museum admission or membership.

» Lakeshore Guardians: The Story of the U.S. Lifesaving Service in Wisconsin: This Schooner Coast Series will be held at 1 p.m. Feb. 4.

View portions of Wisconsin filmmaker Dan Larson’s documentary about this heroic service of the past and how it evolved into the modern day Coast Guard. Personnel from the Two Rivers Coast Guard Station will be on hand for questions and answers after the film. This program is $5 or free with museum admission or membership.

» An Algoma Civil War Story: This Schooner Coast Series will be held at 1 p.m. Feb. 11.

Speaker Mark Teske of Algoma will share his grandfather’s story about how a man from this lakeshore community played a part in the Civil War. This program is $5 or free with museum admission or membership.

» The Mysterious Loss of Pere Marquette 18: This Saturday Learning Series event will be held at 1 p.m. Feb. 25.

Art Chavez will give a presentation on the mysterious loss of the car ferry Pere Marquette 18, which sank off Sheboygan in September 1910. The 18 is the largest undiscovered steel-hulled shipwreck on Lake Michigan, and is the subject of methodical search expeditions by wreck divers and historians. This program is $5 or free with museum admission or membership.
