Police said an adult cousin in the home was putting a .22-caliber handgun into a box about 3 p.m. when it fired a bullet through a wall and into an adjacent bedroom, striking the child, who was not identified by name.
She was taken to Health Central Hospital in Ocoee, then to the Orlando hospital.
Police, alerted by hospital officials, visited the home as part of their investigation.
“Right now, unless we turn up something else, it looks like a sad accident,” detective Jim Berish said.
The handgun was located inside the home. Berish said the investigation is continuing.
