A seven year planning dispute has ended after permission was given to convert two listed barns into houses.

Three Rivers District Council planning committee approved the plans to convert Oxhey Hall Barns into two large houses on December 15.

Veolia Water has been trying to gain permission for the homes since 2004.

Christine McNulty, who has lead a campaign against the plans, said: “It is disappointing that this part of our historic heritage is seriously threatened with loss of character and the denial of
public access.

“The present plans for two dwellings are better than Veolia’s earlier plans for nine work units, but I hope that despite this setback the main Grade II listed barn may yet be preserved for
posterity.

“It seems a pity that an enabling development with the main barn being retained but kept in a better state of repair was not considered.”

In February 2007 a public inquiry was held into plans to convert the structures in Hampermill Lane into two one-bedroom and two two-bedroom homes.

However, at the end of the two-day inquiry the planning inspector upheld Three Rivers District Council’s decision to refuse Veolia permission to build.

I don’t think Veolia will be too bothered, The French company already has a license to print money with it’s monopoly on our water services!
