The U.S. Marines Toys for Tots Campaign is wrapping up another drive for toys by announcing distribution events. Staff Sgt. Dustin Coco of Lake Charles, La., headed the drive this year, his first, and found it to be an incredibly busy project but very rewarding.

Needs have increased over last year, although donations haven’t. Still, it is a campaign labeled “successful” because a lot of people pitched in to help.

In the Town of Crawford, Supervisor Charlie Carnes along with town employees and residents of all ages hosted a Toys for Tots dinner and invited the U.S. Marines to attend and to take back the toys collected. Reportedly it was one of “most successful” individual drives conducted this year, and very much appreciated.

Distribution sites have been announced and rules have been issued to avoid some people collecting toys from each site. Names will be scanned to a database, making it a fair exchange for all involved.

People seeking donations of toys have to bring some form of government identification (a driver’s license, for example, or a birth certificate of the child or children for whom the toys are planned, and proof of address). The method of identification isn’t meant to be unkind, but in years past toys have run out because some people weren’t considerate of others.

Many items have already been delivered to families who filed early with requests and to organizations, including churches. For those who haven’t received toys but have requested them, the locations for distribution follow:

  • In Ulster County, distribution will be Monday from 10 a.m. until all toys are gone, at the Kingston Holiday Inn.
  • In Orange County, distribution is from 10 a.m. until all toys are gone, at the New Windsor Mall, 347 Old Forge Hill Road.
  • To reach the warehouse where the toys have been received and wrapped by volunteers, call 857-4466 or 542-4195.

    Coming up

  • A pancake breakfast with Santa will be from 8 a.m.-noon Sunday at the Washington Heights Firehouse on Ohio Place in the Town of Wallkill. Tickets, at the door, are $7 for those 12 and over, $5 for senior citizens and children 11 and younger.
  • The third consecutive free holiday party for Monticello area children, from toddlers to 12 years old, will be from 1-5 p.m. Sunday. Co-hosted by the Monticello Harness Horsemen’s Association, led by Alan Schwartz, president, and the Monticello Casino and Raceway, it will run along with the special racing program that begins at 12:25 p.m. There will be numerous activities for the children. For information, call John Manzi at 794-4100, ext. 455.
  • This and that

  • I missed Frederica Warner’s 94th birthday Dec. 14, but it’s never too late to send greetings to a dynamic woman who has been involved in community work all her life. She’s best known for organizing and serving as executive director of the nonprofit Meals on Wheels program in Newburgh. Cards can be sent to 38 Roe St., Newburgh 12550.
  • Donations in her honor can be sent to Meals on Wheels, P.O. Box 2615, Newburgh 12550.

  • The Hudson Valley Science Cafe meets at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Diana’s, 1015 Little Britain Road (Route 207) in New Windsor. The speaker is Dr. Douglas C. Maynard, associate professor of psychology at SUNY New Paltz, who will discuss “Understanding the Underemployment Problem: Why Having a Job Isn’t Enough.” The public is invited.
