CITIZEN OF THE YEAR NOMINATIONS

The Lake Houston Area Chamber of Commerce is accepting
nominations for the Haden McKay, M.D. Citizen of the Year award.
This award honors an individual who has given selflessly of
themselves for the betterment of the community. The presentation
ceremony will be Jan. 17 at the chamber’s 2012 awards luncheon.
Nominations are due no later than 5 p.m. Dec. 14. For more

ASTRONOMY CLUB

The North Houston Astronomers meets monthly at Lone Star
College-Kingwood. Visitors are welcome to the next Novice class at
6:30 p.m. and the general meeting at 7:30 on Dec. 16. The program
will include Dr. Aaron Clevenson speaking on “The Kepler Mission –
The Search for Earth.” Club member opportunities include monthly
classes and programs, use of club telescopes, remote dark sky
sites, Astronomical League membership and occasional barbecue

BOOK CLUB

The Kingwood Page Turners will meet Dec. 19 at St. Martha
Catholic Church, 4301 Woodridge Parkway, Porter, in Room 2 at 7
p.m. Discussion will be on the book “Unbroken” by Laura
Hillenbrand, a current New York Times bestseller. All are welcome.

ART PARTY

Watson Huff Galleries recently opened in the Kingwood Town
Center. The gallery hosts special art parties every Thursday from
5-9 p.m. The Christmas party will be Dec. 21 from 5-9 p.m.
featuring live music by Paige Lewis, free drinks and pizza. Regular
gallery hours are Monday-Saturday, 11 a.m.-6 p.m. From Jan. 2-28
the gallery will feature a new collection of Houston area artists
and is calling all artists, painters, photographers, sculptures,

BOOK CLUB

The Kingwood Page Turners will meet Jan. 2 at St Martha’s
Catholic Church, Room 2, on Woodland Hills Drive in Kingwood, at 7
p.m. The group will discuss the classic “Lost Horizon” by James
Hilton. The Jan. 16 meeting will feature Kingwood mystery writer
Gail Wigglesworth, author of the Claire Gulliver Mysteries series.
Her newest book in the series is the recently published “Tea is for

KINGWOOD GARDEN CLUB

The Kingwood Garden Club will meet Jan. 3 at 9 a.m. The program
will be “Mapping a Flower Garden and Bringing in Elements to Create
a Serene Space” with speaker Regina Ripley. After the general
meeting, there will be a short break followed by a floral study
titled “Building a Dramatic Design” by Jan Kramer. The meeting will
be at Good Shepherd Episcopal Church, 2929 Woodland Hills Drive in
Kingwood. The meeting is open to members and guests. Light

KINGWOOD MEMORY GROUP

The Kingwood Memory Group will meet Jan. 3 at 7 p.m. Dr. Paul
Schulz, an associate professor of neurology at the University of
Texas Medical Branch in Houston, will speak about current
developments happening with dementia and memory issues. The meeting
will be held at Kingwood United Methodist Church, 1799 Woodland

ADD/ADHD SUPPORT GROUP

The Attention Deficit Disorder Association – Southern Region
Kingwood/Humble/Atascocita Chapter is a nonprofit organization that
meets monthly from 7-9 p.m. at Good Shepherd Episcopal Church, 2929
Woodland Hills Drive, Kingwood, in Room 211. The next meeting will
be Jan. 19. Dr. Julie Mosier, director of the Family Psychology
Clinic of Kingwood, will be the guest speaker. She will speak about
the “Effectiveness of Psychotherapy with ADD/ADHD Children and
Adults.” The community is invited to attend this informative

DYSLEXIA PARENT SUPPORT GROUP

Parents of students with dyslexia or reading challenges are
invited to attend the group’s next meeting on Feb. 29 at 7 p.m. at
Christ the King Lutheran Church, 3803 West Lake Houston Parkway,
Kingwood. The group meets on the last Tuesday of most months and
seeks to empower parents on the journey of identifying, educating
and nurturing a child with dyslexia. Visit

KINGWOOD GARDEN CLUB SCHOLARSHIPS

Kingwood Garden Club offers scholarships to students who intend
to spend their professional lives pursuing the same mission as KGC
– researching, protecting and fostering horticultural plants, trees
and wildlife. Applicants must have attended Kingwood, Kingwood Park
or New Caney High schools; be a junior, senior in college or a
graduate student; and be majoring in a horticulture- or
environmental sciences-related field. The application for 2012 is
available at www.kingwoodgardenclub.org. Applications are due by
April 1, 2012.
