Listed below are various events taking place across the city on World AIDS Day, December 1, 2011.
Waverley Care’s annual Community Gathering takes place at St John’s Church, Princes Street at 6.30 pm.
This popular event provides an opportunity to celebrate the positive steps made in HIV treatments over the past 30 years, whilst remembering and naming those who have died of AIDS.
The evening includes readings by representatives from Lothian Health, as well as music by Loud and Proud choir and by jazz singer, Cynthia Gentle.
Students from Firrhill High School have organised an evening of music and reflection at Colinton Parish Church at 7.30pm to raise funds for the charity.
The event celebrates the long-standing relationship of both Firrhill School and Braidburn School with Waverley Care’s residential unit, Milestone House. Tickets, which are available on the door, are priced £3 (£2 concession).
Broughton St Mary’s Church, which has been displaying an illuminated ribbon in the run-up to World AIDS Day, will be floodlighting the whole of their building red on Thursday evening.
From dusk until midnight, the building will become a focal point in the Broughton area.
Broughton Street shops have also got behind the charity, with many carrying the charity’s unique tartan HIV awareness ribbons and collecting cans.
Across Edinburgh, Starbucks are, for the third year running, collecting for Waverley Care. Their in-store fundraising so far has raised almost £2000.
EU BLOGS, Edinburgh University’s LGBT Society will be organising their annual Glowball in support of Waverley Care on Friday, December 2.
Incorporating a black tie dinner and ceilidh, this event brings together students from LGBT societies across Scotland and, in 2010 raised £1000.
Telford College students will carry out various fundraising tasks for Waverley Care on World AIDS Day.
Beauty students will be providing taster hand massage and head massage sessions in return for a donation, red ribbon cupcakes will also be on sale, kindly donated by the college’s catering team and Waverley Care will be selling their range of Christmas cards.
Waverley Care is also thrilled to be benefiting from bucket shakes organised by Playhouse staff and the We Will Rock You production company from Friday 2 to Thursday 8 December.
Similar collections during the run of We Will Rock You in 2009 yielded over £10,000.
Bucket shakes will also follow Edinburgh Gay Men’s Chorus concert Mistletoe and Musicals at the Reid Concert Hall, Bristo Square on Saturday, December 3 at 8pm. Tickets available on the door priced £9 (£6 concession).
The local gay community is demonstrating a commitment to Waverley Care by holding events and activities.
From quiz nights to Freddie Mercury events, silent auctions to donations in lieu of drinks and sales of Christmas cards, many of the city’s bars and clubs are getting behind the charity in this, the 30th year since the first cases of HIV were identified.
Waverley Care was established in 1989 to provide care and support to those living with HIV. The charity has developed its services over time to reflect the changing needs of people with HIV and now also supports people who are living with or affected by Hepatitis C.
