Greensboro, NC– A University of North Carolina School has made another ‘friendly’ list to add to its resume.
Monday, the University of North Carolina at Greensboro learned it is considered a Military Friendly School, according to the just-released 2012 G.I. Jobs list.
The listing puts UNCG among the top 15 percent of colleges, universities and trade schools doing the most to embrace America’s veterans as students.
“Faculty, staff and students have worked tirelessly to ensure UNCG is a place where veterans, members of the military, and their families feel welcomed and have the opportunity to reach their educational goals,” said Chancellor Linda P. Brady. “I look forward to working with our campus community as we continue to strengthen the resources we provide our veterans and their families.”
The Military Friendly Schools list stems from research by the G.I. Jobs Military Friendly Schools team. A Military Friendly Schools Academic Advisory Panel, consisting of five higher education administrators, helps determine survey questions and weightings. Rankings are weighted based on: programs and policies to support and recruit veterans (45 percent); financial commitment (35 percent); success in recruiting veterans (15 percent); and other factors, including academic accreditations (5 percent.)
Over the past year, UNCG has taken a number of steps to strengthen support for veterans on campus. Chancellor Linda P. Brady appointed a Military, Veterans and Families Task Force comprised of faculty, staff and students. “UNCG has continually strived to improve services and programs for veterans,” said Nicolle Brossard, a student veteran at UNCG earning her second bachelor’s degree in Human Nutrition. “There are staff in nearly every department that have a personal investment in making sure veterans have what they need to succeed.” Veterans who attend college face barriers beyond finances, said Dedrick Curtis, UNCG’s veteran services coordinator and Navy vet who earned undergraduate and graduate degrees at UNCG under the GI Bill. “They highly respect shared experience,” Curtis said. “Often times they don’t seek help for things a civilian would because they believe they won’t be understood.”
“The G.I. Jobs Guide to Military Friendly Schools” is published annually by Victory Media, a veteran-owned business. Victory Media also publishes “Military Spouse” and “Vetrepreneur” magazines and annually rates the nation’s “Military Friendly Employers,” “Military Spouse Friendly Employers” and “Best Corporations for Veteran-Owned Businesses.”
