PADUCAH, KY – Today marks the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11th terrorist attacks on the homeland of the United States. Many events will be held across the country to remember those who lost their lives and commemorate the unity of our country as a result of the attacks. Listed below are events being held in our area:


WESTERN KENTUCKY 

Farmington

Farmington Church of Christ is honoring local first responders with a reception on Sept. 11 at the church’s fellowship building at 5 pm. A short program will be followed by a cake and punch reception. All first responders are invited to attend.

Mayfield 

A “God and Family” concert featuring Eric Horner will be held this afternoon at 3 pm on the lawn of the Graves County Courthouse in Mayfield. The concert is free. Bring a lawn chair because seating will be limited. 

Additionally, members of American Legion Post 26 will be on hand to ceremonially raise the flag at the beginning of the concert.

Paducah 

“Bikes on Broadway” 

A special edition of Bikes on Broadway will be held this afternoon from 1 to 4 pm. On the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, the Paducah Parks Services Department asks everyone to honor the victims of that tragic day by wearing red, white and blue. Paducah Parks staff will be handing out American flags along the route, and the first 150 people who stop at the Parks table will get a free t-shirt honoring the occasion. The Paducah Police and Fire Departments will have response vehicles at the event and banners for the public to sign to say thank you to all the emergency personnel who worked during the 9/11 rescue and recovery efforts. The Parks Department also will have a banner to sign. The banners will be sent to first responders in New York. 

Bikes on Broadway is a free event that closes Broadway between 4th and 17th Streets in Paducah to vehicular traffic. From 1 until 4 pm, bring your bicycle, skates, skateboards, scooters, tricycles, strollers, running shoes or walking shoes for a fun day of strolling and riding along Broadway. This is the fourth year for Bikes on Broadway. 


Wickliffe 

As part of the Wickliffe Harvest Festival, there will be a Sept. 11 Memorial program at 1 pm today at the Wickliffe City Park on KY 121.

those who lost their lives on Sept. 11, 2001 and for those who continue to defend and serve our country.

SOUTHERN ILLINOIS

Metropolis

A candlelight vigil will be held in remembrance of the lives lost and in honor of first responders, at Fort Massac State Park. The event will be held at the old fort from 7-8 pm. Those attending should bring their own candles, as well as lawn chairs, blankets, etc. For more information, call 618-524-4712.
