Events, ceremonies around Colorado will commemorate 9/11

Every era has its defining momentsevents that shape the communal consciousness and alter our shared history.

Sept. 11, 2001, was just such a day. This weekend and throughout the month, Coloradans will mark the solemn 10th anniversary of 9/11 in myriad ways. In addition to the events listed below, many individual fire departments and small businesses around the state host their own remembrances. Fourth annual Remembrance Run/Walk and Remembrance Ceremony, 6:30 a.m. Sunday. The Remembrance Ceremony, hosted by Tom Mustin of KCNC-Channel 4, includes various military presentations and tributes. It will be followed by a pancake breakfast, and 20-mile, 10-mile and 5K runs. After the runs, there will be refreshments, music and booths. Proceeds benefit Operation Restoration at Lost and Found Inc., an outpatient mental health program for military members, veterans and their families. Memorial Park, 8001 W. 59th Ave., Arvada. Sunrise service, 8 a.m. Sunday. Featuring speakers, police and fire department honor guards, the U.S. Air Force Academy, a choir performance, a flyover by the Colorado National Guard, and a presentation by former Gov. 9/11 Freedom Rally, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday. This festival and fundraiser for military-assistance charities will “honor and respect those who serve and protect” with car and motorcycle shows, a run/walk and a motorcycle ride. Organized by the Colorado Charity Alliance, other event activities include kid and teen zones, a military vehicle and first responder vehicle display, precision skydivers, canine corner, hand-cycling race, and a flag tribute to the fallen inside Dick’s stadium. National Moment of Remembrance, 11 a.m. Sunday. This commemoration was established by U.S. Sen. Frank Lautenberg of New Jersey to recognize the victims of the 9/11 attacks, and co-sponsored by Sens. “Remember Flight 93: A True Story of American Courage,” 11 a.m., 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. Sunday. Arvada Festival Playhouse hosts three performances of this play adapted from a screenplay of the same name, which was based on actual transcripts from Flight 93. 5665 Olde Wadsworth Blvd., Arvada. Free outdoor 9/11 commemorative ceremony, 11 a.m. Sunday. Speakers include Jack McDonnell, retired FDNY battalion chief, and Michael Faughnan, a Colorado resident who lost a brother in the World Trade Center attack. There also will be local honor guards, a bagpiper and a bugler. “Colorado Remembers 9/11” featuring the Beach Boys, Tyler Ward and the Colorado Symphony Orchestra, 1 p.m. Sunday — Gov. John Hickenlooper and Denver Mayor Michael Hancock will be joined be several other state officials for this 10th anniversary commemorative concert, which also features the Colorado National Guard, a military flyover, taps and a firing salute. “Lovers Leapt” at 2:30 and 4:30 p.m. Sunday. The Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center presents this award-winning play by New York playwright Leslie Bramm. Focuses on the decision of two co-workers, the backdrop for this drama is four paintings of the World Trade Center by Joellyn Duesberry on display in the El Pomar Gallery. 30 W. “A Tribute to 0 9/11/01, 10 Year Anniversary,” through Oct. 1. This fine-art exhibit spotlights works by Robert Maestas, one of the 5,201 entrants worldwide who submitted an official concept for the World Trade Center Site Memorial Competition. His entry, created in 200 2/2003, is included in the show along with more recent works. Chicano Humanities Arts Council (CHAC) Gallery, 774 Santa Fe Drive.
