Sir Mark’s filly just too sharp
Hooray (3.20) can give punters plenty to cheer about by winning the featured Supreme Stakes at Goodwood today.
Sir Mark Prescott’s filly was a top-class juvenile last year, completing the Lowther-Cheveley Park double, and scored in Listed grade at the Derby meeting this summer after finishing eighth in the 1000 Guineas.
That odds-on Epsom success came over seven furlongs on a turning, undulating track – so there is every reason to believe she will be well suited by today’s test, given the similar circumstances.
Underfoot conditions are likely to be softer here, but she showed she handled cut in the ground in the Cheveley Park and it was probably the much faster surface that proved her undoing in Ireland last time.
Three-year-olds have a good strike-rate in this race and, getting weight all round, she is fancied to burn off these rivals – many of whom are inconsistent or appear to have seen better days.
Tagula Night (2.10) is not the easiest to catch right these days, but is coming back down the weights and looks to have plenty in his favour in the six-furlong handicap that opens the card.
The five-year-old, trained by Walter Swinburn (left), was an impressive course-and-distance winner on soft ground last autumn. A repeat of that performance would give him a decent chance off only a 5lb higher mark here at Goodwood.
Diamond Run (3.55) has looked an improved performer since switching to handicap company.
With that in mind, he can add to this month’s Lingfield all-weather win.
Seemingly unsuited by going off in front too quickly at Kempton Park last time out, John Hills’s filly is closely related to some smart sorts and remains on a favourable mark.
