Wisconsin has listed Russell Wilson as its starting quarterback for the season opener against UNLV.

Wilson, who transferred to Wisconsin this summer after starting three years at NC State, appears ahead of sophomore Jon Budmayr on the Week 1 depth chart, released Monday night. Budmayr hasn’t been practicing because of an injury to his throwing elbow that might require surgery, and Wilson has worked with the first-team offense throughout training camp.

Badgers coach Bret Bielema didn’t guarantee Wilson a starting spot when camp began but acknowledged the quarterback wasn’t brought to Madison to sit on the bench. Wilson has drawn praise from coaches and teammates for his performance throughout the preseason.

In his three seasons with NC State, Wilson threw for 8,545 yards and 76 touchdowns with 26 interceptions.

Selected by the Colorado Rockies in the 2010 draft, Wilson left NC State before spring practice because coach Tom O’Brien wanted him to commit to football. He played several months for the Rockies’ Class A affiliate before joining Wisconsin in late June.

Because he has graduated from NC State, he’s eligible to play immediately.

Wilson’s new Wisconsin teammates voted him a co-captain for the season Sunday night.
