BERA, Aug 14 (Bernama) — Small and big onions, and garlic have now been listed in the Hari Raya Aidilfitri 2011 Festive Season Price Control Scheme.

This brings the total number of items listed under the scheme to 20, said Domestic Trade, Co-operatives and Consumerism Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob.

Prior to the three new additions, the items previously listed were local beef, imported beef, eggs (Grades A, B, and C), live chicken, standard chicken, super chicken, local buffalo beef, imported buffalo beef, imported round cabbage, red chillies, tomato, grated coconut, imported groundnut, mackerel and potato.

Ismail Sabri said the goods were listed as they were deemed essential to the public during the festive season.

“Last year, there were 17 items involved in the control scheme and this year, we added three more items. Control of goods will be enforced for two weeks from Aug 22 to Sept 5,” he told reporters after handing out assistance in cash and kind to senior citizens at the Felda Rentam Bera here.

Ismail Sabri said the government guaranteed that essential goods in conjunction with the Aidilfitri celebrations were sufficient.

“All wholesalers have ensured that goods such as chicken, coconut and cooking oil are adequate in the market,” he said.

“The Malaysian Palm Oil Board has also increased supply of cooking oil by 7,000 tonnes to suppliers and wholesalers for distribution to traders this Hari Raya,” he said, adding that normally, the board only supplied 70,000 tonnes each month.

He said the ministry’s enforcement team would make its rounds to monitor prices and take stern actions against errant traders.
