Pepper Fest schedule set for Aug. 19-21

The North Hudson Pepper Festival is scheduled Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 19-21, at Pepper Fest Park in North Hudson. The three-day celebration honors the community’s Italian heritage and includes great Italian food, a carnival, parade, queen coronation, spaghetti and hot pepper eating contests and much more.

Proceeds from the Pepper Festival are donated to various groups and organizations serving the Hudson and North Hudson area. For more information about the Pepper Festival, registration for listed events and details of each event, go to www.pepperfest.org.

Talent Search

The annual talent show is Friday, Aug. 19, at 6 p.m. with registration beginning at 5:45 p.m. Cash prizes are awarded in three age categories: 12 and younger, 13-17 and 18 and up. There is a limit of 10 acts per age group. It is encouraged that acts pre-register by downloading the registration form at www.pepperfest.org.

Kid, doll and pet parade

The kid, doll and pet parade is scheduled at 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 19, at North Hudson Elementary. Registration begins at 1 p.m. Parade participants must be sixth grade or younger. No motor driven vehicles are permitted. The Theme is “Out of This World.”

Grand parade

The Pepper Fest Grand Parade is Saturday, Aug. 20, at 11 a.m. Those wishing to enter should complete a parade application which can be found online. The parade begins at the intersection of Lemon Street and Michaelson Street North, running west down Michaelson and then south on Sixth Street N. (Hwy. 35) to St. Croix Street No.

Pepper cooking contest

The amateur food cooking contest is Saturday, Aug. 20, outside the North Hudson Village Hall from 2-4 p.m. Categories include adult and under 14. Adult categories are appetizer/side dish, main dish and dessert. The under 14 category is chef’s choice. Each dish must contain peppers.

Spaghetti pepper eating contests

The Championship Spaghetti contest begins at 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 20. Teams of five will eat one pound of spaghetti each in hopes of the top prize of $75 and a T-shirt for each winning team member.

The second place team earns $50. The entry fee is $25.

The Championship Hot Pepper Eating contest begins at 6 p.m. Teams of five will eat one pound of hot peppers each in hopes of the top prize of $200 and a T-shirt for each winning team member. The second place team earns $100. The entry fee is $50.

Foot races

The Pepper Fest Foot Races are new and improved this year. They will be professionally timed and results will be available online after the race. The one-mile family fun walk/run, 5K and 10K runs are Saturday, Aug. 20, beginning at the North Hudson Village Hall. Registration is online at www.getmeregistered.com/pepperfest. Only online registrants are guaranteed T-shirts. The One Mile fee is $10 ($15 on race day); the 5K fee is $15 ($20 on race day); and the 10K fee is $20 ($25 on race day). The first race at 7:15 a.m. The race is sponsored by Bernicks, Hudson Bowling Center, Family Fresh, Victory 4 U Fitness and Riverfront Athletic Club. Trophies are awarded to the top finishers.

Live entertainment

This year’s live entertainment includes White Sidewalls Rock N Roll Revue on Friday beginning at 8:30 p.m., Uncle Chunk on Saturday beginning at 8:30 p.m., and The Dweebs sponsored by The RiverBank on Sunday beginning at 7:30 p.m.

Royalty

Candidates for the new Pepper Fest courts and the introduction of the outgoing court will be introduced beginning at 7:30 p.m. Friday. The coronation for the 2012 royalty is Sunday beginning at 3:30 p.m.

Other events

Other daily events include food booths, carnival, beer garden and bingo. There will be no fishing contest or volleyball tournament this year.

Grant requests

The Pepper Festival Board is now accepting grant applications from local groups and organizations. Send your application to the Pepper Fest Grant Request Committee, P.O. Box 432, Hudson, WI 54016. All grant requests must be received by Monday, Aug. 8.

Grant requests must contain contact information for the group or organization, information about the group or organization, the amount being requested, and the specific use(s) the grant money will go towards.

Grants are distributed during the Pepper Festival Appreciation Dinner following the festival in early 2011. Those receiving grants will be notified prior to the appreciation dinner.

Buttons

The 2011 Pepper Fest button is available at numerous businesses in North Hudson and Hudson. Buttons are at a reduced rate of $2 whereas they are $3 during the festival. The button is required for entry to Pepper Fest Park for ages 12 and older.

Buttons are available in North Hudson at Seasons Tavern, Freedom, The Village Inn, Kozy Korner, The RiverBank, The Mallalieu Inn, Mudds N Sudds, and Alwin’s Northside Service Tire; in Hudson at the Hudson Star-Observer, County Market, and the downtown Freedom gas station.

The 2011 Pepper Fest button was designed by Samantha Gianforte.

Pepper Fest queen candidates introduced

Seven young women are competing as Pepper Fest 2012 queen candidates. The candidates will be introduced to the public at Pepper Fest Friday, Aug. 19, beginning at 7:30 p.m. The coronation for the 2012 royalty is Sunday, Aug. 21, beginning at 3:30 p.m. at Pepper Fest Park.
