A rare find in South Natick

The buyer that’s looking for a typical New England colonial house with a traditional floor plan should probably pass on this one. But anyone in the market for a more contemporary, open floor plan might find everything they want in this South Natick house.

Broker Helen Johnson of Coldwell Banker in Natick has listed the house at $699,000.

“The price for this house is incredible,” Johnson said. “There are so many new systems that have been installed recently including a new roof (with 50-year warranty), five-zone gas furnace with new water tank, and all new appliances, including washer and dryer. The house is sound but could use a little cosmetic updating.”

Built in 1983, the home’s modern architectural flair is immediately apparent from the curb. Instead of being fitted with grates, these windows are longer than the norm and come in different sizes. What could have been a hipped roof has been replaced with a contemporary roofline with several skylights. The house is definitely not a cookie-cutter style by anyone’s definition. Even the front door sports an unusually designed leaded glass panel that lets light in while keeping the interior private.

Once inside, the imposing two-story foyer is very bright thanks to skylights and is a place where plants thrive. An open, turned wooded staircase and tiled floor complete the spacious entrance hall.

To the left is the living room which has a two-level ceiling, half of which is vaulted. The comfortable room has hardwood floors, skylight, track and recessed lighting as well as two large windows. The living room leads to the large dining room where floor-to-ceiling windows flood the room with natural light, and there are hardwood floors here and also throughout the house. The two rooms flow well together, making them great for entertaining.

Turn the corner into the kitchen where wood trimmed white cabinetry and granite counters are the backdrop for new black appliances. The turned counter allows for stools on two sides. There’s a built-in desk area, a wide window above the sink and sliders located in front of a dining area. The room is completely open to the family room which has a second set of sliders, and both sets of doors lead to the wide deck that has built in benches. The family room has a wood-burning fireplace set in a white brick hearth, and one wall of the room is covered with wood paneling. It also has a built-in planter located in front of the window.

A door in the family room leads to a heated solarium which could easily become everyone’s favorite room in the house. The glass room (walls and ceiling) is a great way to feel as if you are outside without going out into the elements. The private wooded lot makes this sunroom feel like part of a treehouse, and there’s plenty of room for patio furniture.

The first floor also has a half bath and a laundry room. The second floor has a master bedroom with full bath and Jacuzzi, and three additional bedrooms, one of which is unusually large. Some of the bedrooms have double closets or walk-ins and vaulted ceilings. In addition to the full bath off the master bedroom, there’s also a full family bath on the second level.

In the basement there’s a huge finished room with walk-out sliders and half bath. The area could serve as a game room or additional family room.

Perks include central air and vacuum, and a sound/intercom/security system throughout the house. An irrigation system keeps flowers fresh.

The house has a two-car garage and sits on an nearly an acre lot. Clever landscaping makes the property relatively maintenance free. The front lawn is comprised of stone with an English garden that meanders through, so mowing is minimal. Birdhouses hang from ornamental trees and there’s a koi Pond. A circular driveway makes for easy access.

This South Natick neighborhood is tucked away on a road off of Route 16 very close to the Broadmoor Wildlife Sanctuary. It’s convenient to Routes 16 and 27 and is a short drive from quaint South Natick Center.

“This house is a rare find in Natick. There are some contemporary houses in Sherborn but not as many in Natick,” said Johnson.

The well-established neighborhood is quite but has sidewalks and each house has a generously sized lot.
