Although it’s obviously never smart to invest much into a team’s first preseason depth chart, the Dolphins’ version this week did provide one interesting bit of information: RB Reggie Bush is not listed as the team’s kick or punt returner at this point. He is, however, listed as the starting running back.
This matches up with Bush’ desire to be more of an every-down back in Miami—but it certainly goes against the grain when it comes to what Bush has accomplished to this point. In New Orleans, Bush had five career punt returns for touchdowns while averaging just 8.73 carries per game.

Now, given his desire to get a bigger load as a running back, the Dolphins seem to be giving it some serious consideration at this point. Rookie Daniel Thomas is the projected counterpart to Bush in the running game, and
Davone Bess is listed as the starting kickoff and punt returner.
Rookie WR Clyde Gates is listed as Bess’ backup at both spots.
Notes: Speaking of Gates, the rookie wide receiver provided the best highlight of his two-week career Wednesday, pulling down a beautiful catch in the end zone. Gates, who has elite speed, is a very raw
player. A former basketball standout, he has only been playing football for a few years—and he was admittedly overwhelmed when he got the team’s playbook two weeks ago. But if he can start making the types of athletic catches like he did Wednesday, he could quickly become a force for the Dolphins this season. His speed provides the potential to give Miami the missing deep threat in the passing game. Now, it depends how quickly the Dolphins can get him polished to the point where he could make an immediate impression.
