Best retirement destinations listed

WASHINGTON, July 22 (UPI) — AARP has released a list of the most affordable places to retire as baby boomers start thinking about whether to stay put or move on in their retirement years.

AARP The Magazine decided to help Boomers do some shopping, selecting destinations based on affordability but also on criteria such as property and sales tax rates, recreation, and health care, USA Today reported Thursday.

“Given the economy, we were interested in finding places that were less expensive to live,” says Gabrielle Redford, editorial projects manager for AARP The Magazine, but “we threw some livability criteria into the mix.”

AARP decided to exclude cities that have high rates of unemployment and home foreclosures, she said.

The top five destinations on the AARP list were Portland, Maine; Tulsa, Okla.; Gainesville, Ga.; Wenatchee, Wash., and Winchester, Va.

One key factor was median housing prices, ranging from $125,600 in Tulsa to $202,800 in Portland, AARP said.
