GILLETTE, Wyo. — Halliday’s Sadie Gjermundson and Jamstown’s Laine Hanson each picked up performance victories Wednesday at the National High School Finals Rodeo and Zap’s Blake Smith got his first performance victory Thursday night.
Gjermundson, who graduated from Richardton-Taylor High School this spring, won the evening performance — the first of the second round — in the goat tying with a time of 8.51 seconds. Gjermundson was fifth in the goat tying in her Wednesday morning performance with a time of 10.45 seconds.
With the performance win and a strong second time, Gjermundson stands a chance to return for Saturday’s final round.
Hanson won the Wednesday morning performance — the last of the first round — in the breakaway roping with a 3-second finish.
Smith had a 68 to tie for the win the bareback riding.
Dickinson’s Michaela Kathrein finished fourth in the barrel racing Thursday night with a time of 17.709 seconds. She also finished fourth in her first performance Tuesday.
Tate Benson, a Scobey, Mont., cowboy who competes for Team North Dakota, was second in the tie-down roping Thursday morning with a time of 11.27 seconds.
A margin of .04 of a second kept Cotey Hanson of Berthold and Levi O’Keeffe of Mohall out of first in the team roping. Their time of 5.49 seconds came in second to Arizonans Austin Tomaski and Ryan Tripp.
