Time goes slow but quickens when needed

Timepiece landed her first Group success by taking the Etihad Airways Falmouth Stakes – and could not have made it look easier.

Sir Henry Cecil’s four-year-old filly has been tested at a number of different distances and levels, but was missing a Group win on her formbook, despite showing plenty of potential.

However, she made it look ever so simple on the July Course as the 16-1 shot claimed a one-and-a-quarter length win from 13-8 favourite Sahpresa.

There was drama from the off as Memory refused to leave the stalls, just as she did on the Rowley Mile in the 1000 Guineas.

It was Clive Brittain’s Masaya that led them through in a slowly run race, and Tom Queally tracked her on Timepiece, who was dropping back to a mile after winning a listed race over 1m 3f at Warwick last-time out.

And as they started the incline, she quickened up to pull clear of the field, leaving Sahpresa to battle it out with First City for second place.

Trainer Henry Cecil said: “She is a very good filly but didn’t stay in the Oaks. She has a lot of ability and the stiff mile suited.

“She doesn’t like to get there too soon and they didn’t go too fast today. She has come good and has beaten a good filly. We will have a think about what to do now – she is a Group One winner now.”

Queally said: “We have never made any secret of how we feel about her – she has always had the ability. They hacked along, it rode like a piece of work and she took care of them.

“I am pleased for her and for everyone at the yard. It’s brilliant.”
