Barack Obama can’t catch a break when it comes to the Internet. The social networking savvy president recently fell victim to false assassination rumors that spread by hackers through FOX News Politics’ Twitter account. Tuesday, hackers infiltrated Obama’s campaign website and invited users to 2 fake anti-government events.
When users logged on to the campaign’s mobile app, they were directed to 2 events posted by “Commy Obama.” Both events called “Rules of Politics” were set to take place on Tuesday at noon in D.C.
The description of the event listed 21 anti-government criticisms such as “politicians and other public servants lie,” “politicians tell you what you want to hear and offer to provide things for ‘free’ to get votes” and “when government buys, the people pay.” None of the comments targeted Obama in particular but rather the entire model of the U.S. government. A full transcript of the event can be viewed in the screenshot here.
The recent hacks might make us wonder about the security of websites that we trust but officials assure that the security of Obama’s website has not been compromised as the events calendar is completely user generated. The campaign has deleted the event from its listings.
While Obama’s prominent use of social media has put him at risk for attacks by hackers, the president continues to show his willingness to communicate with the public through services like Twitter and Facebook by holding a Townhall meeting on Facebook and announcing his plans to hold a Twitter Townhall meeting Wednesday where he will answer questions using the hashtag #AskObama. He also will begin to sign tweets that he personally posts so followers know the information came directly from him.
