It’s not every day you get to ride a camel in Circular Quay on a Monday morning.
But it’s one experience I can now tick off the bucket-list thanks to Northern Territory Tourism, who have declared this Wednesday, July 6, National Hump Day.
Sydneysiders and tourists got up close and personal with the gentle giants yesterday morning in order to promote the Festival Territory and its events, listed in our story HERE.

Every Wednesday in July Tourism NT are giving away unforgettable Festival Territory adventures, with each Hump Day celebrating a different festival held in the State. To enter is easy. Simply by creating a Hump Day Camel Racer on www.humpdayNT.com, you will go in the draw to win.
But back to the camels. 2009 World Champion Camel Jockey Ian Rowan was thankfully on deck to show me the ropes, giving me a few tips on keeping myself balanced and upright on an animal that can run 40km/h.
“It takes dedication to ride a camel. 97 per cent insanity, 3 per cent luck,” he told me as I nervously boarded. “It’s balance, rhythm and timing.”
But my newest confidante, Jedda (she’s thirty but doesn’t like to discuss her age), convinced me that all camels aren’t just spit and mud. In fact, there’s a lot of soul to these hardy creatures.
No wonder Rowan made the switch from horse riding to camel racing.
“It’s all good fun. You meet terrific people from all over the Territory, over Australia and around the world.”
Hump day will never be the same again
