Historic Emily Cottage up for sale

ONE of Campbelltown’s oldest and most precious landmarks, Emily Cottage, is on the market.

Listed for sale through the Bankstown-based Gold Star Real Estate, the historic cottage has an asking price of $469,000.

An agency spokeswoman said the cottage, next door to Campbelltown Catholic Club, was an ideal location for a cosy restaurant or craft shop.

“Though heritage listed homes are always harder to sell, someone might come along who is looking for something special and ends up falling in love with the property,” she said.

“There aren’t too many properties in the area with as much history as this one, so it has an antique difference with a very authentic appeal.”

Emily Cottage stands as one of the area’s most instantly recognisable properties.

Built as early as 1820, the heritage listed home, is steeped in lore.

The cottage is widely believed to have been designed for use as a toll house, due to its layout and location, on the junction of Queen St, Old Menangle Rd, Appin Rd, and Camden Rd.

There is also a suggestion that the building was, at one time, used by the military, housing a small detachment of mounted police for the suppression of bushranging.

Mystery also surrounds the naming of the property.

Local legend says that a young girl named Emily was struck by lightning nearby and killed.

Another version of the story says that in 1865, a sea Captain who lived in the cottage named it after his brig.
