The efforts of the workers, volunteers and customers of the Habitat for Humanity of Prince William County, Manassas and Manassas Park and its ReStore has helped propel the organization to become one of the largest builders in the country.
According to Builder 100, an annual list of the largest home-builders in the United States, Habitat for Humanity International ranked number six for 2010. This is the second time Habitat has been in the top 10. The organization ranked number eight in 2009.
Last year, the local affiliate of Habitat helped three families become homeowners and repaired 12 homes for existing homeowners. They currently have two homes available for interested families.
Part of the reason they are able to do so much for the community is because of the ReStore in Manassas. They sell donated items—everything from paint and fixtures to furniture and appliances— at a 40 to 90 percent discount. The proceeds go back to the local affiliate and are used to purchase foreclosed homes.
Since it began, the local Habitat has built, rehabbed and repaired 63 houses, providing safe and livable homes for 201 people.
“We are thrilled that our work to provide affordable housing has contributed to Habitat’s ranking as the sixth largest builder in the United States,” said Traci DeGroat executive director at Habitat for Humanity of Prince William County.
“We are proud to help families obtain affordable housing, and we thank our supporters for their commitment to helping families in need.”
“Our placement on the Builder 100 list is a testament to what can be accomplished when people work together,” said Larry Gluth, vice president of US and Canada for Habitat for Humanity International. “… We are grateful for the generosity of our donors, volunteers and advocates who have joined our efforts to help families obtain safe, decent and affordable homes and to strengthen communities.”
In 2010 Habitat for Humanity built 6,032 homes in the US.
