House that time forgot goes on sale

A 17TH century farmhouse with no bathroom, loo, drains, mains water or heating is on the market for £250,000.

Grade II-listed Dandra Garth is a four-bedroom house in three acres of land and was the home of Walter Harper, 92, who has recently moved into a rest facility.

Mr Harper and his family farmed the land from 1942 until the early 1980s.

He kept warm in front of an open fire and washed by boiling water on the range to fill a tin bath in the kitchen.

A tap supplies cold water from a spring and the toilet is an outside earth closet.

Mr Harper’s family persuaded him to get electricity at the home in Sedbergh, in the Yorkshire Dales, 10 years ago, before which he used gas lights.

His nephew Roger said: “Getting the electricity in was a revolution. It is very primitive but he liked it.”

Estate agent George F White said: “It needs everything doing but it’s great.”
