Suspects trapped in fire listed in critical condition

Ralph Shane Pace and Nicholas Surrett were airlifted to the Joseph M. Still Burn Center at Doctors Hospital in Augusta, Ga., following the explosion and fire at 656 Stoney Mountain Road about 1:30 a.m. Saturday.

Hospital officials did not release any further details on the men’s condition.

Pace and Surrett were attempting to cut what they thought was a water line when they ruptured a gas line instead, according to Chief Deputy Greg Cochran of the Henderson County Sheriff’s Office.

Cochran said Sunday that criminal charges against Pace and Surrett are pending, following the release of their physical condition. He added that those charges likely would include breaking and entering.

A third person also is being investigated in the incident, he said.

Donna Moody is suspected of being an accomplice to Pace and Surrett — serving as a lookout for the two men — and was being held under a $6,000 secured bond, Cochran said.

Moody drove Pace and Surrett to Pardee Hospital after the explosion. The men then were transported to Doctors Hospital in Georgia.
