Lawrie listed as ‘day to day,’ Jays debut in doubt

BALTIMORE—Brett Lawrie remains “day to day” in terms of returning to games with Triple A Las Vegas, and his status has delayed the Jays plans for summoning him to the big leagues.

“He’s still day to day for getting into games,” Jays manager John Farrell said Friday night in Baltimore about Lawrie, who was struck on the hand by a mid 90 mph fastball and has missed the last three games with Vegas.

There were high expectations prior to the injury for Lawrie making his major league debut with the Jays in Baltimore.

That scenario may now be pushed back to the beginning of the week, when the Jays are in Kansas City.

“The first thing is we haven’t made that decision,” Farrell said on when the team plans to call up Lawrie.

“He’s still rehabbing in Vegas. The good news is the swelling is going down and the strength is increasing. X-rays were negative.”

A possible scenario will see Lawrie resume baseball activities—batting practice and fielding – within the next day or two. Afterwards, the Jays may want to see him repeat the results he produced prior to the injury.

Lawrie continued his torrid pace with Vegas, both to start the season, and after being asked to adjust his approach to cut down on strikeouts and work the pitch count.

It was universally believed the 21-year-old Canadian would have made his major league debut in Baltimore had he not suffered the injury.

Adam Lind, on the other hand, appears set to rejoin the Jays as early as Saturday or Sunday.

“He stole third base twice,” Farrell said of Lind, who accomplished the feat in a rehab game with class A Dunedin Thursday night.

“He’s having quality at-bats every time he comes to the plate, he looks good.”

Lind has been on rehab ever since soreness in his lower back put him on the disabled list May 17, and snuffed out a wonderful 10 day stretch in the big leagues where Lind was putting up big numbers.

Farrell said Lind was to play at first base Friday night (he had been at designated hitter with Dunedin). If his back responds well to that assignment, it’s likely Lind returns to the Jays within the next two days.

“It could be before this series ends (in Baltimore),” Farrell said.
