PROVIDENCE –– Nonprofit developers are planning a statewide open house event on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. for their affordable housing that is currently available for sale.
Like their counterparts in the for-profit world, nonprofit developers are having difficulty selling houses and condominiums in the current economic climate of high unemployment and tough credit standards, although there are waiting lists for affordable rental properties.
Housing is considered “affordable” when no more than 30 percent of a household’s income is spent on rent or on a mortgage, taxes and insurance.
State law requires that at least 10 percent of each community’s housing meet the definition of affordable, but some communities fall short of that goal.
Most of the properties listed below are income-limited; that is, buyers have to have an annual income below a certain threshold to qualify. The contact people listed for each property can more fully explain the criteria, which can differ for each property.
Open houses will be held at the following locations:
Barrington
• Walker Farm Lane, 562 County Rd., new houses priced from $146,200 to $210,000. A model home will be open.
