The former education and registrar’s office in Skipton is up for sale, but potential buyers will have to be teetotal.
They will not be able to use the Water Street building for dancing, boxing, gambling, or for any purpose which could potentially cause a nuisance.
The Grade Two-listed building, which has a price tag of £375,000, was formerly a Methodist Chapel and features an impressive classical facade.
Current owner North Yorkshire County Council is due to move out in July to new premises in Belle Vue Mills, and it has put the building on the market.
But caveats imposed by its former Methodist owners, rule out a variety of uses, including it being used as a funfair or for the manufacture, distribution or sale of alcohol.
It may also not be used for any purpose that could potentially cause a nuisance to neighbours and windows on the north west side must be kept opaque at all times.
A further clause, which could put off potential buyers, is that if changes to the building over the next 30 years result in an increase in its value, the Council will receive half.
Bruton Knowles, which is marketing the building, says it has already received interest from potential buyers.
It comes with 14 car parking spaces, is described as being suitable for a variety of uses and with scope for conversion.
A spokesman for North Yorkshire County Council confirmed that the site was up for sale and Council staff would be relocated to shared offices with Craven District Council.
“The new development at Belle Vue Mills will allow both Craven District Council and North Yorkshire County Council to work together in a highly-effective way to ensure the continued provision of
first-class services while enjoying the efficiency benefits of sharing office accommodation.
“We are marketing our Water Street offices with the aim of maximising savings and securing a sale prior to the building being vacated.”
