A LISTED building was badly damaged in a fire which could have been started deliberately.

The fire began at Grade II listed Greenfield House in Greenfield Lane at about 2am on Monday, and North Wales Fire and Rescue Service crews called to the scene.

Firefighters spent about six-and-a-half hours battling the flames before making the immediate area safe.

One neighbour witnessed the blaze and saw emergency teams swarm the 19th century building, which has been empty for the past couple of years.

He said: “The first I heard of it was when they arrived and then there was a huge amount of noise.

“You could see the flames coming through the roof and it’s really badly damaged now.

“The building had been up for sale at auction a couple of times after the owner died a couple of years ago, it’s such a shame that this has happened.”

Another neighbour said: “I heard about it at 5am and witnessed it from across the road.

“It’s not the first time there has been a fire at that site. There was a car set on fire there a couple of months ago, but it was parked too far away for the house to catch fire too.

“The building had been empty for the past couple of years, apart from the odd squatter now and then.”

A North Wales Fire and Rescue Service spokeswoman said firefighters carried out an investigation at the scene, and concluded the cause of the blaze was ‘indeterminable’.

Flintshire County Council officers have since visited the site.

A spokesman said: “An officer from building control visited the building on Monday to determine whether it was in a dangerous condition.

“He considered certain parts of the structure inside the building were dangerous.

“The owner has been advised and is arranging to make the building secure to prevent access to the inside.”

Greenfield House had been up for sale at £325,000, but was recently taken off the market.
