The City of Petersburg is getting aggressive with property owners who have homes in disrepair and in danger of collapsing.
Right now, the city has two homes listed for emergency demolition, and about two dozen more they are keeping a very close eye on that could be added to the list.
The two homes on Shore and Hinton Streets, the city says, are on the verge of falling down.
The city wants the property owners to repair the houses or pay to have them demolished.
If the city takes over and tears down the houses, it won’t be taxpayers footing the bill.
The city will place a lien on the property to recoup the expense.
Just last week, two homes, side by side were demolished and that land will now turn into a community garden.
The city hopes other property will also be reclaimed after houses are removed through demolition.
