Elzaam could be among Roger Varian’s first Royal Ascot team after his six-length demolition job in the Listed Whitman Howard Investment Bank Carnarvon Stakes at Newbury.
Varian, who has made such a bright start since taking over Michael Jarvis’ Newmarket stable this season, had elected to return last year’s Coventry Stakes runner-up to six furlongs after an ordinary run in the European Free Handicap and the result was fairly spectacular.
“The Free Handicap was a funny race but we had to try as he had a 2000 Guineas entry,” said Varian of the 100-30 shot.
“He has so much speed we had a feeling this might suit and he seems a happier horse without headgear.
“He is in the Golden Jubilee at Royal Ascot but it’s only a tentative entry at the moment.”
Coral and Paddy Power both quote Elzaam at 16-1.
Izzi Top’s connections were undecided about a possible shot at the Investec Oaks after her narrow victory over Dancing Rain in the Listed Swettenham Stud Fillies’ Trial Stakes.
Izzi Top (8-1) is also entered in the French Oaks and Coronation Stakes and trainer John Gosden said from York: “She’s a nice filly and she didn’t handle the ground at Newmarket in the Pretty Polly – she found it too quick running into the dip.
“I’m keen to talk the jockey and see what he felt about stamina limitations.
“I’ll also speak to the owner as well, who will know more about her pedigree than I do.”
Mark Weinfeld, representing owner/breeders Meon Valley Stud, added: “We thought the ground was quick enough today, she would prefer it to be good rather than good to firm.
“We’re not entirely sure she would get a mile and a half, so we’ll wait to see what the trainer thinks.”
Richard Hannon has introduced Canford Cliffs, Strong Suit and Major Cadeaux to racing in the Health Care Maiden Stakes but his pair, Poole Harbour and Trumpet Major, had to settle for second and third behind the Alan Jarvis-trained Wise Venture (4-1).
“Jim Crowley said he was the best-behaved two-year-old he has ever ridden,” said Jarvis.
“There’s plenty to come but we won’t be too hard on him as he’s a bit special.”
Crowley completed a double when flying through late aboard Mauritino (8-1) in the Scope Charity Handicap.
Hannon and Richard Hughes made the scoresheet when 11-4 favourite Census skipped two and a quarter lengths clear in the Scope Handicap.
“It depends what the handicapper does, but the King George V Handicap at Royal Ascot could be a race for him,” said Hannon.
It was even plainer sailing for 1-4 favourite Best Terms, who took her unbeaten record to two in the Scope Charity Fillies’ Conditions Stakes without coming out of second gear.
“We’ll have a look at the Albany and the Queen Mary now,” added Hannon.
The concluding Scope Apprentice Handicap went to Luke Rowe and 4-1 favourite Peintre D’Argent by eight lengths.
