A half-sister to California Flag, the California-bred co-horse of the year in 2009, is among the juveniles that will be offered at Monday evening’s Barretts May sale of 2-year-olds in-training in Pomona, Calif.
The half-sister to California Flag, named Cosmopolitan, is consigned by Sam Hendricks, agent, and is Hip No. 63 in the one-day sale, which begins at 6:30 p.m. Pacific. The sale features a main catalog of 107 2-year-olds and a supplemental catalog with 15 additional hips, including a 3- and a 4-year-old.
Cosmopolitan, by Harlan’s Holiday, is out of Ultrafleet, a 19-year-old mare by Afleet. Ultrafleet has produced the multiple stakes winner Cambiocorsa, who earned $522,055; and the stakes-placed Shadow Raider, who earned $315,517. California Flag, 7, has won 9 of 21 starts and $1,014,904. He is currently in training at Santa Anita for an expected comeback. California Flag won the 2009 Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint at Santa Anita and has not started since finishing eighth in that race at Churchill Downs last fall.
The May sale is the second evening sale at Barretts this year, preceded by a March select 2-year-olds in-training sale that saw an increase in average by 11 percent, to $100,709, and a median of $70,000, an increase of 17 percent over 2010.
The 2010 May sale had an average of $36,000, down 2 percent from 2009, and a median of $20,500, an increase of 2.5 percent. The 2010 sale topper was The Factor, who was purchased for $250,000 and has since won 3 of 5 starts and $307,180. The Factor set a six-furlong track record of 1:06.98 at Santa Anita in December and won two Grade 2 stakes earlier this year – the San Vicente Stakes at Santa Anita and Rebel Stakes at Oaklawn Park. The Factor was seventh in the Arkansas Derby at Oaklawn Park on April 16 in his last start.
Twice the Appeal, who won the Sunland Park Derby in March and was 10th in the Kentucky Derby on May 7, was purchased for $35,000 at the 2010 May sale. Twice the Appeal has won 3 of 11 starts and $449,920.
Monday’s May sale is the final juvenile sale of the year in California. Because of its timing toward the end of the auction calendar, some 2-year-olds on offer have already gone through the sale ring and some have started.
The sale features two winners – Compass Rock, an Orientate colt who won a two-furlong maiden race at Golden Gate Fields on April 29; and Joyzey Billy, a Momentum colt who won a maiden special weight race for statebreds over 4 1/2 furlongs at Hollywood Park on April 24.
They are part of a supplemental catalog that includes 10 horses who were part of the Ocala Breeders’ Sales spring sale of 2-year-olds last month. The most expensive purchase of those 10 was a Stevie Wonderboy filly purchased for $53,000 by Dennis O’Neill, the brother of trainer Doug O’Neill. Stevie Wonderboy’s first foals are 2-year-olds this year.
Two colts who were listed as not sold for six figures at the Barretts March sale – by Bellamy Road ($110,000) and Congrats ($145,000) – are back, part of the consignment of Callaway Thoroughbreds.
Consignor Sam Hendricks, as agent, has an 18-horse consignment that includes an Atticus filly who is a half-sister to California Nectar, the winner of the Grade 2 Santa Ynez Stakes at Santa Anita earlier this year.
There are two colts by the multiple stakes winner Hard Spun, whose oldest foals are 2-year-olds – Hip No. 41, who is a half-brother to the multiple stakes winner Rockport Harbor; and Hip No. 55, a half-brother to Sinister Minister, the winner of the Grade 1 Blue Grass Stakes in 2006.
