Receiving the award from the Salisbury Civic Society
Kingsway House in Wilton has received a commendation from the Salisbury Civic Society for the successful conversion of the former workhouse into residential use. The awards are to promote a respect for historic buildings and a desire for visual enhancement within Salisbury and District.
Kingsway House, which was once known as the ‘Wilton Workhouse’, dates back to 1837. The grade II listed building has been sympathetically refurbished and now provides 31 affordable homes for rent and shared ownership, consisting of 1 and 2 bedroom apartments, 2-bedroom courtyard apartments and 2-bedroom houses.
The judges felt that the wholehearted approach to the project had left the buildings looking positive and well cared for, with a simple but appropriate landscape treatment and attractive feel to the whole complex. With this, the general indication was that enough trouble had been taken to make a commendation fully merited.
The Architects were, Ken Scaddon Associates from Portsmouth. Construction was carried out by PMC Construction and Development Services also from Portsmouth.
Annette Cattle, Project Manager for Spectrum Housing Group said:
“We are proud to be acknowledged for this project which not only brings a listed building back into use, but also provides much needed affordable homes for the people of Salisbury.”
