ONE of the region’s biggest festival events is about to burst into action with a packed 11-day program for the 2011 Penola Coonawarra Arts festival, which is filled with a fantastic array of events, performances, exhibitions and workshops.

The hard working committee that has developed the event have listed their top six must-see features of the diverse program.

James Reyne: One of the greats of the Australian music scene, James will be supported by Adelaide band The Jump Daddys in what promises to be a fantastic night at Wynns Coonawarra Estate.

Workshops, workshops, workshops: In 2011 the festival committee have put together a wonderful array of hands on workshops. Writing workshops, printmaking, sculpture, textiles — it’s all available for you to try and to learn something new. A fantastic opportunity to experience first-hand and in a small intimate group.

Co-Opera: A long time festival favourite this year is performing The Marriage of Figaro on Friday, May 20, at Rymill Hall. Due to funding cuts, Co-Opera may not be able to attend the festival in 2012 and this may unfortunately be our last opportunity to see them perform for a while. If you love opera and love Co-Opera, this year is a must see!

Fiona McIntosh Lunch: Come and be entertained by internationally-renowned author Fiona McIntosh, writer of crime, fantasy and historical saga. The festival committee is very happy to present a Literary Lunch with Fiona at the 2011 festival on the Sunday at Heyward’s Royal Oak Hotel. It will be a wonderful opportunity to hear the author’s thoughts and to ask questions.

Kids sub-program: It’s a very full Little Kids, Big Kids Art Zone this year. We have artists and teachers coming from around Australia to Penola this year to teach, entertain and delight. But spaces are limited for each event and workshop so get in early to guarantee a spot.

Films abound: One film night just wasn’t enough so in 2011 we are having two. On Saturday night Leconfield hosts The Long and the Short of It!, featuring the just-announced SA Short Screen Award winning films followed by ‘Exit through the gift shop’, a fascinating movie/doco that was nominated for an Academy Award. Sunday night it’s time to relax a little and let us entertain you with the movie about wine ‘Sideways’, featuring in the Leconfield barrel shed.

The full program is available both in a printed format and on the festival website artsfestival.com.au.

Tickets are on sale from the Penola Coonawarra Visitor Information Centre, which can be contacted by calling 8737 2855.
