TRAINER Chris Waller is weighing up the pros and cons of a Stradbroke tilt with pint sized filly Red Tracer ($2.50) who handled the heavy conditions best to win today’s Listed James H.B. Carr (1400m) at Royal Randwick.

The daughter of Dane Shadow gave favourite backers the ideal start to Sydney Cup day with a slogging win in the opener edging out Melbourne filly Flokkati by 1 ½-lens with Patinack miss Potions a neck back in third.

Red Tracer, a sister to Waller’s Group 1 Galaxy winner Shellscrape, has now won consecutive Listed races and possibly earned herself a trip to Brisbane for the $1 million Stradbroke Handicap in June.

“We could look at the Stradbroke but in our mind she’s just a baby, she’s only a little filly and pretty fragile and takes a few days to get over her runs which is why we didn’t go for the Coolmore, as a result we’ve got away with two good Listed wins because of that.

“I’ve got no doubt she is going to be a good filly in the spring but if we go to the Stradbroke, that doesn’t give you a very big break before the spring and that’s what we’ll be basing our decision around.’’

Heavy overnight rain saw the Randwick track down-graded from a dead (4) to a heavy (8) by start time in the first, but it posed no problems for Red Tracer despite some anxious moments.

“She is a very good filly – all she does is try,’’ Waller said.

“I thought stepping up to the 1400m on a very wet track I thought she was in trouble at the 200m but she dug very deep and was coming away on the line.

“She’s got a good future.’’
