County to have eBay-like property sale

TIPPECANOE COUNTY, Indi. (WLFI) – If you like shopping online, you’re in luck. You’ll soon be able to buy certain properties in Tippecanoe County online.

The county will be setting up a Commissioner’s Sale online that will sell tax certificates for properties that haven’t sold in tax sales.

Commissioner Tom Murtaugh said 25 to 30 properties will be listed on the county’s website. He said the sale will work a lot like eBay. People make bids on a property. He said the minimum bid would be about 10 percent of the taxes owed or $50, whichever is greater.

Murtaugh said the county wants to sell the properties so it can start collecting taxes on them. He said some of the land that will be for sale has structures on it, but many lots are empty.

“The taxes on these properties have not been paid for a number of years. We want to get them into the hands of folks who can use the property. That generates the tax revenue again,” he said. “We’re not collecting it now anyway. We went through the tax sale to try and collect them but nobody bid on these particular properties for whatever reason. So now, you are to the point where you have to forego the past and move and try to collect taxes on these properties.”

Murtaugh said a date hasn’t been set yet for the sale, but it will last more than a week.

Murtaugh said this is the first Commissioner’s Sale in Tippecanoe County.
