Paul SnowdenBurnout bounced back from his disappointing performance on debut to win Saturday’s in the $70,000 Shadwell Estate Co (UK) Cup (1200m) for two-year-olds at Caulfield.

The Peter Snowden-trained son of Lonhro finished seventh on debut behind Dinner Date in the Listed Merson Cooper Stakes (1000m) in November.

Burnout was again slow to muster speed and settled at the tail of the field in the small field of six but was able to stay within striking distance of the leaders.

Jockey James Winks was denied a run at the top of the straight when trying to push out underneath Eight Stars but then switched back to the inside to gain an uninterrupted passage three metres away from the rail to overhaul General Offer and win by a narrow margin on the line.

Burnout ($5-$6.50) defeated Caravaggio ($5-$5.50) by 1-1/4 lengths with Eight Stars ($6-$10) working home out wide for third a further long neck away in third.

Pacemakers General Offer ($2.35-$2.70-$2.60 fav) and Chi Chi ($5-$6.50-$5.50) faded into fourth and fifth respectively.

“We’ve got a good opinion of him,” stable foreman Paul Snowden said.

“The race didn’t fall his way on debut, it was 1000 metres and he got ran off his legs. Even today it was like that again.

“It was also wet that day (in the Merson Cooper) and he didn’t like it but he found the line well today.”

Burnout will next appear in the $100,000 Listed Anzac Day Stakes (1400m) for two-year-olds at Flemington on April 25. The most recent edition was won by the Leon Corstens-trained Epic Dragon.
