The Journal and English Heritage launch photography competition

PICTURES are in demand of the legacy left by the North East’s past as a photographic competition was unveiled yesterday.

The Journal has linked-up with English Heritage to launch the contest.

Jeremy Reed, English Heritage visitor operations director for the North, said: “It is all about marking the start of spring and the chance to get out and about.

“With so many interesting English Heritage properties on our doorstep and many other listed and quirky old buildings around, we are asking readers to take a seasonal spring picture of their favourite.”

The prize is a family pass for a year to all English Heritage sites and five runners up will receive a day pass to a property of their choice, plus a copy of Played in Tyne and Wear, a history of the North East’s sporting heritage.

English Heritage sites include Chesters and Housesteads forts on Hadrian’s Wall and Corbridge Roman site.

Tucked away just a mile from Corbridge is Aydon Castle, one of the finest and most unaltered examples of a 13th Century English manor house.

Then there is Belsay Hall, castle and gardens, and at the coast the castles at Dunstanburgh, Warkworth and Tynemouth, and Lindisfarne Priory on Holy Island.

There are also numerous listed buildings, ranging from churches and war memorials to historic houses and images such as bridges, bandstands, parks, old sporting venues and streets of architectural beauty. The competition is open to two age groups – 16 and under and over 16s. Entries, titled Spring Into Action and with your age in brackets, should be emailed to north.east@english-heritage.org.uk

Entries can also be posted to or handed in at English Heritage, Bessie Surtees House, 41-44 Sandhill, City Centre, Newcastle Upon Tyne NE1 3JF. The closing date is April 30.

Mr Reed said: “This is a great opportunity to celebrate the wonderful heritage right on our doorstep and we are looking forward to seeing the spring photographs which will capture both the season and the history.”

“All we ask people to do is to when they are visiting our properties, or seeing other historic buildings, is to take a camera with them and capture the image that neatly combines heritage and spring together.

“We are so fortunate to have a region with such a vast and varied heritage and this competition is the ideal way to showcase just what we have.”
