What a Weekend: Events in Martin County, April 1-April 4

Given today’s date, the temptation was soooo strong to make an April Fools’ Day version of What a Weekend. I mean, you’d believe that Charlie Sheen was adding The Lyric Theatre to his “Violent Torpedo of Truth” tour, wouldn’t you? But not to worry, the events listed here are all on the up and up.

POKER RUN FOR FALLEN MARINE

The Lance Cpl. Justin J. Wilson Memorial Foundation, named for the U.S. Marine from Palm City killed March 22, 2010, in Afghanistan, will sponsor a poker run and family day April 2.

Three poker runs will begin at 9:30 a.m. at Sebastian, Port St. Lucie and Riveiera Beach, visit several American Legion and VFW posts and Marine detachments, and end at Treasure Coast Harley-Davidson, 4967 S. U.S. 1 in Stuart, for an event with live music, food, bounce houses, games, auctions and food and beer vendors.

Cost is $10 for the first poker hand, $5 for additional hands. The foundation helps military families with financial difficulties spend time with their loved ones before they deploy. For information, go to justinswings.org.

PERFORMANCE BY A PRODIGY

At 18, Caroline Goulding is a violin prodigy. She will perform Bruch’s Violin Concerto on the General Kyd Stradivarius for the final concert in the Atlantic Classical Orchestra Series IV at The Lyric Theatre. The concert will begin with the overture to “The Barber of Seville” and conclude with Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony.

Goulding will give two performances at 4 and 8 p.m. April 1 at The Lyric Theatre, 59 S.W. Flagler Ave. in Stuart. Tickets are $40 for the 4 p.m. show and $45 for the 8 p.m. show and are available by calling 772-286-7827 or going to lyrictheatre.com.

JOIN THE DIGITAL AGE

Attention fellow Luddites: We can get help joining the 21st century by attending a technology fair, TechMania, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 2 at the Cummings Library, 2551 S.W. Matheson Ave. in Palm City. Lessons include how to choose a computer to fit your needs, what to do when your computer won’t boot up, how to use Facebook and other social media tools, ditto Microsoft Kinect and Wii games as well as iPads and smartphones (like the ones Dick Tracy used to use).

Admission is free and open to the public. For information go to library.martin.fl.us (if you can do that, do you need to go to the fair?) or call (that’s more like it) 772-221-1403.
